Pet Shop Boys, the iconic electro-pop duo from the 1980s, are gearing up for the release of a new album titled Nonetheless on April 26 via Parlophone. To build anticipation, the band has shared the album’s second single, “Dancing Star,” along with two B-sides (“Sense of Time” and “If Jesus Had a Sister”), three remixes, and a remix of their previous B-side “Party in the Blitz.”

The song “Dancing Star” is a tribute to the legendary Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who famously defected from the Soviet Union in 1961 to pursue a successful career in the West. Nureyev tragically passed away in Paris in 1993 at the age of 54 due to complications related to AIDS. The track serves as a reflection on Nureyev’s life and legacy, capturing the essence of his journey through captivating melodies and poignant lyrics.

Before the release of “Dancing Star,” Pet Shop Boys introduced the album by unveiling the first single, “Loneliness,” accompanied by a visually striking music video. The upcoming album, Nonetheless, was produced by James Ford, known for his work with artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, Blur, and Gorillaz. This album marks the duo’s first full-length project since 2020’s Hotspot and 2016’s Super.

In a press release, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, the members of Pet Shop Boys, expressed their vision for Nonetheless, stating, “We wanted this album to be a celebration of the unique and diverse emotions that make us human. From the more dance-oriented tracks to the raw poignancy of the introspective ballads, with their beautiful string arrangements, each track tells a story and contributes to the overall narrative of the album.”

The duo also praised James Ford for his contributions to the album, noting that he brought new elements to their music and pushed them to explore a more minimalistic sound at times. Overall, Tennant and Lowe expressed their pride in the final product, describing Nonetheless as a record that holds significant personal significance and artistic growth for them.

Aside from the musical releases, fans can look forward to experiencing the full album when it drops on April 26. With a blend of danceable tracks, introspective ballads, and captivating narratives, Pet Shop Boys are poised to deliver a compelling and emotionally resonant listening experience with Nonetheless. For fans eager to immerse themselves in the band’s latest offering, “Dancing Star” and the accompanying tracks provide a preview of what’s to come on the highly anticipated album.
